Number Three 1 Vs. Snow Drifts 0

It was a balmy 5 F outside, sans wind chill. Read below Number Three's thoughts written as a paper for Writer's group.

Sitting at the computer, I heard my mother tell me to go outside and shovel a drift that blocked the entrance to our driveway. I grudgingly got up and prepared for my arctic trek. Outside, I trudged to the driveway and surveyed the task before me. What should’ve gone through my mind were thoughts of how I could never finish this, but instead I was taken aback by the beauty of the drift. Sculpted by the wind, this was truly a work of art. Its elegant curves, contoured lines and majestic shelf overlooking a chasm between two drifts all took my breath away. As I started to work, I was careful not to harm this beautiful sculpture.

I shoveled away, pausing often to admire the beauty of the landscape: the softly rolling hills covered with snow and dotted with corn stalks; the clusters of seemingly lifeless trees oscillating with the wind; the white dust wandering over the ice-covered road, its patterns changing with every second as it strives to find a resting place.

I shoveled more, my thoughts turning to the Time Magazine® article I had read at breakfast. The article was about a lady who was a liberal pro-choicer who, among other things, called Catholics in general “anti-choicers”. This made me very, very mad. I even thought of a bumper sticker to counter this by saying “Pro-Choice, Pro-Death, What’s the Difference?” or something to that extent. I smiled to myself in thinking about how much controversy it would cause in this country that supposedly allows us freedom of speech…

I stopped mid-thought. The time had come to destroy the wind’s work of art. The beautiful drift was now looking death in the face. I became even madder still and decided not to destroy it just yet. I ran inside and got the camera. I thought that the pictures didn’t do it justice, but it still captured some of the glory. But now, it was time. I started shoveling.
