The pope arrives in Brazil!

I just got this from my sister, in her wonderful usage of the English language: "The dear, dear, simple, humble, super nice pope has just arrived in Sao Paulo!!!! My friend Frederico and two priests just watched it on a very bad TV down here at the University!! Nina"

Please pray with me for my native country... There is much at stake in the Church in Latin America. His very first words, I hear, speaking alongside the left-leaning president Lula, were directed to protect the sanctity of life from conception to natural death.

SAO PAULO, Brazil — Pope Benedict XVI began his first trip to Latin America Wednesday by laying down church law on abortion, suggesting he agrees with bishops who said Catholic politicians in Mexico excommunicated themselves by legalizing abortion in that nation's capital.

Benedict, who will inaugurate an important regional bishops' conference during his trip, also spoke strongly against abortion during his first speech in Brazil. Speaking in Portuguese, he said he's certain that the bishops will reinforce "the promotion of respect for life from the moment of conception until natural death as an integral requirement of human nature."

I was thinking of you last night when we were watching EWTN's coverage of the Pope's arrival in Brazil. I think they said they would have more coverage today - I just haven't had time to turn on the TV yet. We will all this to our list of family prayer intentions.
