Picture Books of the week

Our weekly trips to the library allow me to peruse through mounds of picture books: these two I found recently and I though every homeschool family would love checking these out and reading them!

Needless to say, it is a wonderful thing for us to check out books that talk about virtuous people, saints, and values we hold dear in our families. The libraries keep count on what’s being checked out and make decision according to these numbers. So, don’t leave you library card at home!

Gregor Mendel, the friar who grew peas by Cheryl Bardoe

Everything in this picture book is wonderful: the illustrations, the tone of the text, the amount of biographical and scientific information. This will serve as a fabulous introduction to Mendel's innovative scientific work on genetics for a 5th or 6th grader's science curriculum, or for just general family's enjoyment!

The miraculous Tale of the Two Maries, by Rosemary Wells

The power of God, the generosity of friends, the gratitude of the afflicted: it's all here, plus local color too! This book delighted us all and it brought a bit of the Catholic culture of France into our home. Two young friends, both "Maries", help friends in need from heaven. The story is creatively told in their point of view and the illustrations are so cute.
