Picture book of the week

We're immersed in James Herriot's world lately--listening to his stories on audio, watching his BBC episodes, and finding picture books by him! The whole family is captivated by his stories that--much beyond the simple veterinarian plot they seem to be about--speak of the human spirit: the courage, nobility and generosity of the people that populate the kind, friendly veterinarian's world.

Smudge, the Little Lost Lamb by James Herriot
1994 St. Martin's Press, 32 pages

We picked up Smudge from the library last week and loved reading it out loud. Enjoy! I quote the editorial blurb below:
Smudge is an adorable black-and-white lamb, who lives in Farmer Cobb's farmyard with his mother and many other animals. One fine spring day, though, Smudge decides to see the world outside Farmer Cobb's fence, and finds himself on a glorious adventure-until he discovers that he can't get back in .

Smudge, the Little Lost Lamb, James Herriot's newest story for children, is another delightful addition to the beloved country veterinarian's award-winning series of books for young readers. Illustrated with the radiant watercolors of Ruth Brown, it will be a joy for readers of all ages.

We love all the James Harriet picture books! They are recommended in the Sonlight homeschool lists, too.
