Three new picture books were very popular with the kids this week:
How Big is It? by Ben Hillman was read again and again especially by Numbers Three and Four--and you'd think they would be way beyond Picture Books! The book inserts photographs of big things inside other familiar big things so we can have a visual idea of-- how big they really are! Lots of "wow, wow" were heard as they flipped the pages.
Matisse, the King of Color, by Laurence Anholt tells the story of a friendship between the aging artist and young Monique, the nurse who cared for him. When she enters a small Dominican convent, by coincidence it is a few yards from where Matisse retires! They are able to continue their friendship and the well known artist ends up helping them with the building of their new chapel. I had seen photos of that chapel before--but the book depicts it in a surprising, delightful way! Interestingly, the text doesn't mention Monique's entering religious life--although it can be inferred. Thankfully the author's note explain the whole thing in detail in the last page.
I first saw Ox, House and Stick, the History of Our Alphabet by Don Robb, in the new Emmanuel Books catalog. Well, it turned out my library had it! Chances are anyone reading this book will learn something interesting about the alphabet! I did--in every page! Don't miss it!

When I went to reserve your latest recommendations (which we always enjoy, btw, despite our ages), I found another book that you might want to look for: How Strong Is It? by Ben Hillman. It's listed with a publication date of 2008 and is on order at our library, so I think it may be quite new.
Too funny-- I had it already on hold!
I just found the alphabet book at our library a few weeks ago as well - it is so interesting.
Now to check out the Matisse book - I've been compiling a list of picture books and hands on resources to study the artists. This will be a great addition. Thanks.
You are welcome! Happy to be of service!
