Identifying North American birds

I picked this handsome Peterson guide form the library the other day for a reason: our acreage seems to be a pleasant spot for so many beautiful, wonderfully-sounding birds this summer. The cool air and open windows certainly help here to our awareness of their presence! I am fascinated by North American birds, and love to discover their names!

Number Four took this picture just two days ago, we called him to bring the camera out while the girls and I shelled peas for dinner: he succeeded to photograph the gorgeous goldfinch before it flew away.

Birdwatching has been a big hobby of mine for a while now, but I still can't recognize them by their sounds.

We do have many lovely birds here in North America, although I think South America has us beat in variety and colorfulness.

Enjoy.

Thanks, Vicki, but I only remember small, brown things in Rio. And city pigeons. Here they are huge and colorful. Robins alone are gorgeous! I think the big colorful S. American ones are far from where I grew up, although pet birds are common everywhere and are usually parrots or "canarinhos", little canaries.
