Final Co-op Art Projects

Yesterday we had our co-op concert and art show. This was our final art project: a mosaic of our newly restored cathedral, each tile done by a student. The one above is the High Schol, below is the Junior High. I will be sending these to the diocesan newspaper.

A beautiful dress and veil

My Rosary this morning went to the royal couple, may their marriage be long and happy, may God bless them with many children. And may this wedding mark the end of the strapless wedding dress!

In the meantime my sister reports from Cracow, where all of the streets are decorated for the celebration this Sunday! A celebration of a different sort of kingdom, a higher one...

Jeanne Birdsall's Picture Book

Flora's Very Windy Day, by Jeanne Birdsall, illustrated by Matt Phelan, 2010 Clarion Books.

Jeanne Birdsall is the award-winning author of our dear Penderwicks series, the story of the widower professor, his Latin exclamations, and his four daughters. This week we have her picture book at home, and as expected it has the right balance of contemporary and traditional flavors... The illustrations are adorable and you can see some of the illustrator's work in the Amazon page.

Flora is a big sister, in charge of her little brother... and an afternoon windy day whimsical whirl reminds her of how much she really loves him. This book has the repetitive poetics little children love... it makes me wish I had a little toddler still around, begging for a read-aloud!

In our house, we are literally counting the days for the publishing of the next Penderwicks book...

Signs of life

Easter brought milder temperatures... we are actually above 50 F today. We found some signs of life outside... but have not gotten out in the garden yet. Too much rain.

I thank the Risen Lord, for life, and the promise of garden fruit.

Easter Kittens!

Born in the glorious weather we had for one day on Easter Sunday, the four new additions to our acreage were a gift to animal-loving Number Seven, and duly named Gloria, Hosanna, Jubilate and Excelsis!

Our kids on TV...

... singing the Easter TV mass with the Bishop!
Posted by Picasa

He is Risen! Alleluia!

Easter Vigil last night at church was moving... from the blessing of the fire outside, though the candle it procession into the dark building, the Gloria in Excelsis with lights and bells rung by the numerous pontifical servers who surrounded the faithful, through the reception of the new members of Christ' Church, through the bishop's words, down to the final hymn. Lord, how can I be ever more grateful for all You have done for me?

In the end, tears streamed down my face as the granting of a Plenary Indulgence had been announced, the choir Alleluias sounding so joyful, and beautiful remembrances of Mamae in my heart.

He is Risen! Alleluia!

Happy Easter to All!

A good read

The National Catholic Register has a wonderful daily update that is free. One of my favorite columns is one that collects bits from blogs around the country. Today the is a good one on Gregorian Chant, read it here.

Our good bishop's sermon last night

The church was packed... and the altar boys, deacons and clergy worked in studied choreography in their starched, ironed surplices. The incense here is the best I have ever smelled, a heavenly scent that filled the church and our hearts with a longing for God. The men's choir sang the Latin a Capella hymns we all love from childhood... truly it was a gorgeous celebration of the Mass of the Lord's Supper, the great feast of the Institution of the Eucharist.

And our good bishop's words in the sermon... they had the power to pierce our hardened hearts, because they came from a true and humble heart in love with the Eucharistic Lord. He spoke of the washing of the feet and how he has commissioned a new sculpture of this humblest of Jesus' actions to be above his bishop's chair in our soon to be re-opened newly restored cathedral, to remind him of what his role is as a bishop: to serve.

He proceeded then to retell the story of the great fire at Saint Raphael's in Madison, WI, when he was still there and not our bishop yet. We all felt we were living it, and he took us to the horrors of seeing his dear cathedral in flames, and his concern or the Tabernacle on the Body of Christ in the fire. He spoke to the firefighters, he said, who did not give him permission to enter the building, but allowed him to come to the door to show them the general location of the tabernacle. One firefighter, a Catholic, he said, led a team into the burning building, and after a few minutes, our bishop, who had wept in sadness for the horrific spectacle in front of him, wept again, this time for joy, as the firefighters proceeded out from the smoke and flames, reverently, carrying the ciborium containing Our Lord.

His voice broke, he choked in his own emotional remembrance, and our tears emerged, the entire body of the faithful rapt in his words and re-living his love for the Eucharist in the unforgettable event. The Tantum Ergo and his solemn leading of the Eucharistic Procession at the end of Mass only served to enhance this love in our hearts.

Thank You, Jesus, today of all days, for our good Bishop, for the Eucharist, for our Salvation.

Holy Thursday

Nocturn II, Breviarium Romanum (1962)

From the Treatise of St Augustine, Bishop (of Hippo)

Upon the Psalms liv. 1.

Give ear to my prayer, O God, and despise not my supplication : attend unto me and hear me. These are the words of a man travailing, anxious, and troubled. He prayeth in the midst of much suffering, longing to be rid of his affliction. Our part is to see what that his affliction was, and when he hath told us, to acknowledge that we also suffer therefrom; that so, partaking in his trouble, we may take part also in his prayer. He saith : I mourn in my exercise, and am troubled. Wherein mourned he? Wherein was he troubled? He saith : In my exericise. In the next words he giveth us to know that his affliction was the oppression of the wicked, ( Because of the voice of the enemy, and because of the oppression of the wicked,) and this suffering which came upon him at the hands of wicked men, he hath called his exercise. Think not that wicked men are in this world for nothing, or that God doth no good with them. Every wicked man liveth, either to repent, or to exercise the righteous.

Would to God that they which now exercise us were converted and exercised with us! Yet, while they are as they are, and exercise us, we will not hate them : for we know not of any one of them whether he will endure to the end in his sin. Yea, oftentimes, when thou deemest that thou hatest thine enemy, he whom thou hatest is thy brother, and thou knowest it not. The Holy Scriptures show us that the devil and his angels are already damned unto everlasting fire, and therefore of their repentance it behoveth us to despair; but of theirs only. These are they against whom we wrestle within; to the which wrestling the Apostle stirreth us up where he saith : We wrestle not against flesh and blood, (that is, not against men whom we see,) but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world. Eph. vi. 12. He saith not the rulers of this world, lest perchance thou shouldest deem that devils are the lords of heaven and earth; what he doth say is, rulers of the darkness of this world, of that world which they love who love the world, of that world wherein the ungodly and unrighteous do prosper, of that world, in fine, of which the Gospel saith : And the world knew Him not.

We have seen iniquity and strife in A the city. v. 10. Behold, the glory of the Cross. That Cross which was the object of the insults of God's enemies, is established now above the brows of kings. The end hath shown the measure of its power : it hath conquered the world, not by the sword, but by its wood. The enemies of God thought the Cross a meet object of insult and ridicule, yea, they stood before it, wagging their heads and saying : If He be the Son of God, let Him come down from the Cross! Matth. xxvii. 39, 40. And He stretched forth His Hands unto a disobedient and gainsaying people. Rom. x. 21. If he is just which liveth by faith, Rom. i. 17; Hab. ii. 4, he is unjust that hath not faith. Therefore where is written iniquity we may understand unbelief. The Lord therefore saith that He saw iniquity and strife in the city, and that He stretched forth His Hands unto that disobedient and gainsaying people, and, disobedient and gainsaying as they were, He was hungry for their salvation, and said : Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do. Luke xxiii. 34.

Special foods

Number Six has learned to sprout her own sandwich-mix seeds.... easy and yummy.

Number Seven has requested that she drinks only raw milk from the farm. It is her favorite milk, and since she has many of her older sister's allergy symptoms, we are hoping this will curb her tendency towards developing an allergy to dairy later in life.

Home, sweet home

A bad photo, but a sweetness reigns in my heart as Number One arrived just before dinner. Few things bring more gladness to a mother's heart. Ours is a happy home this evening, preparing for the great holy feast. Number Six is playing piano, and we will have a special dessert together soon, with coffee. Then on to read more of the Pope's book. It has been very interesting!

Lord, I beg You, forgive all of my faults as a mother, and I give You thanks for the sweet rewards children bring.

Come, Risen Lord!

Gluten free, dairy free cornbread

Number Two sent an email saying this cornbread turned out delicious! She substituted all of the dairy for rice milk and coconut milk so it would be also dairy free for her.

Our friend Fr. Austin on Chant Cafe

Fr. Brian Austin, FSSP, is interview by Jeffrey Tucker of the Chantcafe.com from Church Music Association of Amer on Vimeo.

Wow! Vote for this video!

A student at John Paul the Great made this for the NY Archdiocese contest, they are having a huge confession day today. Her mother is a fellow homeschool mom in a yahoo national group and just posted it and asked us to spread the word! Each vote counts and she could win first prize! (Just "like" it). We loved it!

Holy Week read-aloud

Inspired by our good Bishop's excellent homily during the gorgeous chanted Palm Sunday Mass, Husband read half of the first chapter aloud last night. We are privileged to have a pope who can bring into our home such intelligent, beautiful reflections! We will be reading it throughout this holiest of all weeks in the year! Alicia, from whom I received the gift of this book, has posted a review of the book on Love2Learn.

WCC Video, gorgeous!

It is beautifully done! We know three families with kids in this first graduating class... and many other students at the college, several of whom came from our own homeschool group! Number Four is attending their summer program in July... he can't wait! I remember being so impressed by Dr. Carlson's vision when he came to speak to our group. May God allow that the college finds generous donors and grows, and that one of our children go there!

Two new picture books at the library

Robin Hood and the Golden Arrow, retold by Robert D. San Souci and illustrated by E. B. Lewis, 201o Orchard Books

Robin Hood and the Golden Arrow retells the classic story of Robin Hood and his men in the Sherwood Forest... the oversize format and colorful watercolors bring the well-known story to life, adding some details from the original sources. The Author's Note at the end of the book explains little about the origins and sources of the classic tale.

Shadow by Suzy Lee, 2010 Chronicle Books

Who hasn't had fun with shadow play as a child? When my parents projected slides my siblings and I loved the 'blank' breaks--it was time for shadow play! This wordless book can take you back to when your imagination could run free... until dinner time that is.

An evening at the park

The weather today has taken a turn for the worse again and snow is predicted for Friday. Yesterday was a rare beautiful day and we enjoyed it fully by being at the park after our classes at Tutoring Center. As Number Six is now old enough to play Frisbee, I think this will happen more often. Number Seven even got to enjoy playing a little tennis! My friend Nancy and I walked around and I discovered beautiful new things in a familiar park! A thank you to my friend for showing me that we can discover new sights and interesting things without traveling far!

An engagement picture

Number Two wrote a note to the kids and we read it to them last night, so it makes it official. The girls went to bed saying, "Wow, we have an engaged sister!" She attached this nice recent photo of the newly engaged couple. Seems like we are going back about 35 years with the seventies look and the flowers! :-)

To our dearest daughter and her fiancée, we wish a life of happiness and peace, and the rewards that a life of work and commitment brings! May God bless you both!

I admit Husband shares some of the most interesting stuff in my googlereader.

Congratulations!

Yesterday afternoon we were privileged to attend Number Six's first organ recital. The organ is a massive, gorgeous Bedient instrument in a church in downtown Sioux Falls where she is fortunate to receive weekly lessons! She was the youngest of Mrs. K.'s students and the first to play, and her Adoro te Devote sounded like heavenly music to our ears.

On another note, she was also notified that she has been awarded a scholarship that will go toward her organ lessons the next school year! The audition took place a bit over a week ago and it was not the easiest experience for her. She came through, however, with beautiful composure and confidence. Congratulations to our dear Number Six. We couldn't be more proud of you!

Video of the pope's ordination

I just watched this amazing video on this blog. In my comment there, I wrote:

What a wonderful video, thank you. Last year I was fortunate to attend a diocesan ordination with my sister in Petropolis, Brazil. She is a professor at their major seminary and we were able to have nice seats in a huge cathedral that was literally bursting at the seams! The number of people and the general pride they took in their newly ordained priests was similar to the one in this video. My experience last year was one I will never forget.

Blogging report

My images have not been integrating properly, and I have not had the time to look into it. It makes blogging a little more complicated. In the meantime life has been a non-stop whirlwind as the middle school Quiz Bowl season intensifies this time of the year. With Number Six a constant competitor and Number Seven beginning as well, I have been going to the competitions and lending a hand. These take a huge chunk of time as we usually leave the house sometime after 2 PM and do not return until 9 PM or so. On top of that Husband just returned from a two week-trip that seemed interminable.

In this interim, the browns outside have decided to begin a slow move towards the green. I would be outside today if it didn't decided to rain as well. My facebook profile last night went like this:
