"O Mostrengo", poem by Fernando Pessoa

I’ve been thinking about my father, and came across this recording of a poem he used to say out loud, I sent the link to my brother Petô as a “gift”  for his birthday today.

O Monstrengo

(My own translation-- I am still looking for a good one!)

O mostrengo que está no fim do mar

On the ends of the ocean, the mostrengo

Na noite de breu ergueu-se a voar;

took flight in the dark of the night

À roda da nau voou três vezes,

Around the caravel he flew three times

Voou três vezes a chiar,

Three times he flew, all the while screeching:

E disse: «Quem é que ousou entrar

"Who is the one who dares to enter

Nas minhas cavernas que não desvendo,

in my lair, place I do not reveal

Meus tectos negros do fim do mundo?»

 my light-less end-of-the-world lair?"

E o homem do leme disse, tremendo:

And the helman shook al over and said:

«El-Rei D. João Segundo!»

 "El-Rei Dom João Segundo!"

«De quem são as velas onde me roço?

"Whose are these sails I brush against?

De quem as quilhas que vejo e ouço?»

Whose this keel, I see and hear?"

Disse o mostrengo, e rodou três vezes,

Said the mostrengo. turning three times,

Três vezes rodou imundo e grosso,

Three time he turned, filthy,

«Quem vem poder o que só eu posso,

"Who comes with power that is mine alone,

Que moro onde nunca ninguém me visse

I, who dwell in a place unseen

E escorro os medos do mar sem fundo?»

And drain the fears on the depthless sea?"

E o homem do leme tremeu, e disse:

And the helman trembled and said:

«El-Rei D. João Segundo!»

  "El-Rei Dom João Segundo!"

Três vezes do leme as mãos ergueu,

Three times the helman stretched his hands,

Três vezes ao leme as reprendeu,

three times they returned to the helm,

E disse no fim de tremer três vezes:

And said, as he trembled three times:

«Aqui ao leme sou mais do que eu:

"Here at the helm it is much more than me:

Sou um Povo que quer o mar que é teu;

I am a People who wants your sea

E mais que o mostrengo, que me a alma teme

And, more than the mostrengo, whom my soul fears,

E roda nas trevas do fim do mundo;

and turns, in the shadows of the end-of-the-world,

Manda a vontade, que me ata ao leme,

reigns the will, the will that ties me to the helm,

De El-Rei D. João Segundo!»
