For the Summer Mothering Carnival

Donna-Marie Cooper O'Boyle is hosting her Summer Mothering Carnival tomorrow, and I meant to get around to posting this earlier. As it is, the times is just right...

Donna proposes:

Do you vacation or stay home and take day trips? Do you do crafts with the kids, any summer studies, or just chilling out? Do you do anything special to keep prayer in your summer?

Now that we have college kids we make the taking-child-to-college trip our "vacation". Last year we camped for three days with friends from NY State by beautiful Lake Michigan on our way there. This year we have a freshman moving in there as well, so we rented a cabin in a state park near the college. (I make sure all of the books for the next school year are ordered before we leave.)

I may have a reading list for one or two children, but was a rule we visit the library weekly and books continue being part of our book-full house. The girls and I color whenever we have a chance, especially if there is an Illuminated Ink contest out there.

I have a large garden and they are welcome to help me anytime. Sometimes I do require the big boys to help. Sometimes it's hot enough for all of to get under the sprinklers! We do swimming lessons and we may enjoy the pool as a family a couple of times. We do host a lot of company, both family and friends, all summer, and these are always special, fun filled days.

We pray as a family every night. When company is here, we invite them to participate in our prayer time with us. It is always a wonderful way to close the day, because much conversation ensues and often dots are connected.

As for projects, just this past week I came up with one! Husband and I were on a walk around our property the other evening—on our neatly mowed paths that meander in and out of the woods--and I suddenly remembered an idea I had for this place ever before we moved here: to make fourteen stations of the cross wooden crosses along the way. I’d like to spend no money in materials but to build them completely out of natural resources found around our acreage. The kids and I will work on the creation and building of the crosses and Roman numeral markers, and Husband will secure them on the ground.

Wish us luck! If we accomplish this, watch for progress-posts and hopefully for a post on the inauguration/blessing day!

I think an outdoor Stations is a fantastic summer project! I look forward to seeing the results. This would be something good for our family too. Last year we had Stations in the living-dining room, but it's not a large room and thus kneeling and shuffling around the furniture in the room was a little comical. Making use of our largest "room" (the outdoors) seems sensible!
