Christ the Redeemer makes it to the New Seven Wonders of the World final list

Christ the Redeemer, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, May 2007I am just delighted the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio made it to the final list published in Lisbon yesterday. In this post, back in January, I talked about the project that was to culminate on 7/7/07, and asked for votes for my childhood hangout. Yes, when I was 3 years old we moved to a house my dad had built on the foothills of the serra atop which the statue sits. We used to hike up there: 8 km of steep hiking, but oh, what a glorious reward the view was when we reached our destination! My reason for the delight and for voting for the including of the statue in the new Seven Wonders of the World list was twofold: the memories of a beautiful childhood spot of my childhood and the inclusion of a sacred monument of the Christian faith!

Brazil's Statue of Christ the Redeemer, which gazes down over Rio de Janeiro, is one of three winners [of the new Seven Wonders list] from Latin America. Read more about it in this news BBC news article.
