This past Saturday evening I hosted the first meeting of the Well-read Mom book club here in Brookings, at a lovely downtown restaurant. The Well-Read Mom book club is a national, rapidly growing, effort to provide women of all ages with a platform for doing and discussing challenging reading, be it great literary works or spiritual reading. My enthusiasm could be seen on Facebook:
Incredible that it has been one year already since I started this last year. I remember driving there wondering if anyone would show up... and really not knowing anyone yet. Now it's a room-full of like-minded friends... A highlight of the month for sure for me. We have new members, and a general excitement for being together to discuss great reading selections.
This year we are reading:
September - Hannah Coulter by Wendell Berry
October - Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
November - Lilacs and The Long Ago by Mary Lavin
December - The Secret Diary of Elizabeth Leseur by Leseur
January/February - The Betrothed by Manzoni
March - Hound of Heaven at my Heels by Waldron
April - The Jeweler's Shop by Wojtyła
May/June - Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy
