1500 piece puzzle!

While we have quite the mini-winter back outside, I enjoy puzzles during the time I am not busy on the computer with student work or with chores. Perfect activity while listening to the Miss Marple mysteries I have been listening to, and the daily homilies by the outstanding, erudite, wise and practical Padre Paulo Ricardo.

Amazing biography

Opening February with a biography that's proving to be unforgettable. Undset writes beautifully but does not turn it into a romance novel. There is so much documentation of this saint's life-- including all of her letters and dictated text--that it reads so true. Talk about inspiration for one's spiritual life.

Looking back

I have been looking back and selecting pictures of Number Six growing up... I posted about her vocation in the national homeschool moms' group and there are so many questions about her upbringing etc. I just love to look at these!

Reading David McCullough's books

I have been listening to the history books by this author that are available on Hoopla, which I have free from the local library. These are the two I have listened to these past two weeks--I feel as if I have never learned so much about the American Revolution until now. The second one is very interesting, telling stories of multiple americans living in France. I search for images of the people and the paintings mentioned--the two below were on the 1885 Paris World Fair.

Rocky Mountains by Bierstadt
Niagara Falls by Church

The making of this  statue of Admiral Farragut sculpted by St Gaudens is a fascinating final chapter in the Greater Journey.

Earthquakes 2019

Number Six texted as soon as the two earthquakes happened one day apart. She described the sensation as "indescribable" and she said "I felt was I was going to pass out". We are thankful she is on safe grounds should a third large one happen.

She has experienced so far two evacuations due to fire and mudslides, and we were saying the earthquake was the only thing missing... Since CA doesn't really have tornadoes.

Reed of God

I’ve been reading, or listening to, The Reed of God for book club. Number Five has joined a chapter of the Well Read Mom Book Club as well, so we are both enjoying the same book. Caryll Houselander writes in a personal way, like words she would write down daily without excessive attention to density or professional editing. After reading, or listening to, three Bill Bryson non-fiction books, this feels more like a conversation than a book. Her reflections are very personal, intimate, they reflect the development of her thoughts and imagination on the presence of the Blessed Virgin life on earth. She wrote it in London while the world was at war, and she brilliantly juxtaposes the Life brought by the Blessed Virgin into a world so full of death. Advent is the underlying theme, but she expands the idea of advent, or patiently waiting and letting something grow—to many different aspects of human life.

Library card!

The other day I finally got a library card. Nice library and location, and a free app for audiobooks on my phone. Listened to "First Man", interesting biography of Neil Armstrong.

Book Club begins again

Book Club started! A beautiful sunset in Downtown Brookings welcomed me as I drove in early to set up things. We had a lively discussion about friendship, including social-media friendships, and listened to audios by founder Marcie Stockman about the topic, and about the books for this year. We also talked a little about the first reading selection for the year, The Death of Ivan Ilych, for which I wrote the reflection and discussion questions in the printed companion.

Snowflakes photos!

Number Six noticed them as we were running errands: the snowflakes were the huge, fluffy kind! They aren't very common here. I got the camera and took these by the front door, experimenting with different dark backgrounds.

A few more from Number Two's blog

Last post with Number Two's photo-blogs. She took so many wonderful photographs during her extended stay here this summer... I just have to mark them here on my blog and I hope you will go to each post and enjoy them fully!

She did a lovely, lovely family photo session of our new friends Marisol, Raul and kids!

Her "Little Cousins" photos were fantastic!

I chose this one of a "Sweet Sixteen" session with friend Nicole because it shows our new piano!
